Ways to Serve

Zion Lutheran Church has many ministry opportunities that you can be part of.  Do you sing or play an instrument?  Love helping others?  Like things more "behind the scene" opportunities?  Are you a "go getter?"  What ever your personallity may be, we have the ministry that is right for you!

Here are a few things we currently need volunteers for

  • Wanted: Praise Team Voices

Who: You who have been watching the fun and thought, “Why did I never try that?”  You who have a voice to share.
What: Enjoy fellowship and practice on the weekend music. Test your voice in private with the team. No expectation to sing in the following service. Just enjoy the practice and relax in a new experience.
When: Saturday Night Practices, 4pm-5pm OR Sunday Morning, 10am – 11am
How: Just come on up, and say, “Hi, I’d love to try a practice with you all!”
Music: Weekly music selections are sent via email. Songs can normally be found on internet/iTunes/music sites to pre-learn unfamiliar selections from the emailed lists.
Why:  The Holy Spirit calls us to use our given abilities in service to God.
  • Wanted: Pioneers Home or Denali Center Church Caregivers, Monday Evenings, 6:30pm; Friday Mornings, 11am.

Who: You: who have been looking for a way to get involved and share your Christian love with others.
What: Enjoy fellowship and serving others by helping residents come down to the weekly Zion service in their activity room. Add more singing and worship to your week outside of Sunday church.
When: For Pioneers Home, Monday evening, meet at 6:15pm; for Denali Center, Friday mornings, meet at 1030am to start the learning of who and how to bring the residents down to the service. (Most of us all felt strange at first, but we all continue to find pure joy in this loving service)
Where: Pioneers Home 2221 Eagan Ave, Fairbanks.  Denali Center 1510 19th Ave, Fairbanks, the facility joined with Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.
How: Give Pastor Joe a call at the Zion office (456-7660), or arrive at either location at the respected time.
Music: We enjoy singing a great list of favorite hymns each week.
Why:  The Holy Spirit calls us to use our given abilities in service to God. This is a wonderful way to love and care for many of those who made Alaska and Fairbanks what it is today.

  • Wanted:  Greeters

Who: Individuals and/or families
What:  Open a door, shake a hand, let people know we have children’s bags, show them to the restrooms—make them feel welcome.
When:  Saturday at 4:45pm and Sundays at 8:15am and 10:45am.
How:  Ideally we would like enough people at each service to greet guests at the door, equip them for the service (bulletin/hymnal), help them find a seat if necessary, help them find the nursery, and engage them in conversation.
Why:  Our goal in this ministry is to welcome people so that they can come and get connected to Jesus and to this community of believers.  Contact Sandy Bolz at careministry@zionfairbanks.org to greet.
  • Wanted: Nursery Ministry

Who:  Have your children grown up and moved out?  Are you needing a grandma or grandpa fix?  Love children?  This is for you!
What: Giving mom and dad a break to participate in a Bible Study or teach Sunday School.
When:  Sunday, 9:45am during the education hour or 11:00am during worship. Our goal is to have enough volunteers (about 15; 5 teams), that each team would only be scheduled for once a month.
How:  Call the church office and say, "I'd like to volunteer for the Nursery!"
Why: Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”  Matthew 19:14.
  • Wanted:  Open Arms Volunteers

Who:  Grandparents or retired Teachers
What:  To be a warm welcoming part of the lives of pre-school/kindergarten children.
When:   Register to volunteer any free hours you may have available to come and spend quality time with a specific child or the entire class!
Where: We have 4-Pre-school and 1-Kindergarten rooms.   Call 907-455-9466 or come see us at 2980 Davis Rd.
How:  You'll have opportunity to read a book (one on one), play a game, or just be a listening ear for one who needs to speak.  There are volunteer guidelines/in-kind forms and a background check to complete prior to entering the classrooms.
Why:  Our children are our future—we need to let them grow and mature into all that they can be through the love of God.
