Open Arms Child Development Center at Zion Fairbanks, Alaska

Open Arms offers a full day kindergarten program for up to 20 children that meets five days per week. The school day runs from 8:15 to 3:00 each day with before and after school care available. The program offers several pluses over the form half-day program:

A longer school day with fewer transitions provides more learning time and prepares the child for later school years;
Opportunities for enriching the curriculum in all subject areas including fine arts;
Time for enhancing basic skills in reading and math;
Opportunity for community service projects;
Available, on-site childcare with convenient drop-off and pick-up for working parents;
Tuition schedule just slightly higher than cost of the preschool program;
A state-certified, full-time teacher

Full-day kindergarten is a growing reality across the country. Thirty-six states now offer the program with a total enrollment that is approaching 60% of the eligible children. Research supports the benefits of the extra time to children who have experienced the program. At this time, it is not available in the public schools in Fairbanks.
